Gzdoom coop5/15/2023 ![]() Whereas originally these ports weren't the highest quality Nerve and iD have continued to add features such as 16x9 widescreen, add on support, local multiplayer and more to make one of the best Doom source ports around. ID Software worked with Nerve to create these modern Doom ports built on the Unity Framework. I'm going to order the Doom ports top to bottom as a sort of recommendation system where the top most, I recommend most. If you want to dive back in to Doom it might not be obvious the best way to play so I hope this post helps that. ![]() My recent dive back into the original Doom and subsequent focus is still going strong and one fun part of that is that I've tried out many of the major Doom source ports. So does Doom Classic but no networking in that.Recently I completed the original 1993 Doom campaigns Knee Deep in the Dead, The Shoes of Hell & Inferno. Odamex and Eternity replicate old doom.exe or doom2.exe so well they can play its demos correctly. I do recommend letting him get familiar and having a lot of fun with the base game a while before going totally nuts with custom stuff, but do whatever and have fun. Of course most of them may be designed for single player but they may still work. This is actually a good opportunity to play powerful mods utilizing GZDoom's Zscript which LZDoom supports I guess a good deal like an older version of GZDoom, but the three big client server online ports don't being based on older versions of ZDoom. While Zandronum, ZDaemon, and Odamex are best for playing online with a bunch of strangers, just about everything has relatively easy peer to peer online or on a local network where one player go whateverdoom -host 2 and other whateverdoom -connect 555.555.5555 (whatever the other's ip address). You can extract the wads from official Classic versions. If the steam version he's playing is the old dos version in dosbox, then that does have multiplayer capability but it's much easier to just take its wad and play with a source port. Playing multiplayer with a local friend using separate computers, you can use just about any version, except the official Doom/Doom 2 Classic does not have networking and EDGE's networking is broken. Good luck configuring controls for four players. Some maps/mods utilizing its Doom Definition Files.Ħ. EDGE - networking still broken after 20 years but has 2 player splitscreen now. My first experience of a good smooth four player Doom game across two computers.ĥ. Two player splitscreen that you can combine with networking. ![]() Great on older hardware you can plug a mouse in both an old ps2 port and serial port so both players can use mice. Doom Legacy (a good amount of editing features, got Boom support? or did one odd version just have Boom). Doom Classic or Doom 2 Classic (the current official id/Bethesda version, also true splitscreen) - more editing features than old dos vanilla since limits are raised and has dehacked support so plenty of great stuff to play.Ĥ. Unfortunately not integrated into the current main version of Eternity. Make sure you read the initial forum post how to get the splitscreen version going. Eternity (Splitscreen Branch) - also a ton of editing features including anything Boom compatible, but there's been fewer things made to take advantage of Eternity definitions. LZDoom "splitscreen" (but most demanding on system) - most maps/mods to play with most editing features support. Best 3 options (3 of the 4-ish that allow four player):ġ.
